Austin-Bergstrom International Airport is one of the fastest-growing major airports in America — passenger volume more than doubled from 9.4 million in 2013 to over 22 million in 2023, driven by Austin's tech boom (Tesla, Apple, Google, Oracle, Samsung). It's a single-terminal airport (Barbara Jordan Terminal) located 5 miles southeast of downtown Austin on the former Bergstrom Air Force Base.

That single-terminal design makes connections and navigation easy, but it creates real capacity pressure during major events. The South Terminal closed permanently on March 31, 2026, sending Allegiant and Frontier into the main terminal. AUS set a single-day TSA screening record of 45,048 passengers during the October 2025 Formula 1 Grand Prix weekend.

On-airport parking at AUS is among the most expensive in Texas. The Red Garage charges $35/day, the Blue Garage $26/day, and the Economy Lot $12/day with a free shuttle. Off-airport lots through Triply start at around $10.81/day pre-booked, saving up to 70% compared to the Red Garage.

FastPark & Relax — The best overall off-site option at around $10.81/day pre-booked. Covered parking, 24/7 shuttle every 5–10 minutes, and a 3-minute ride to the terminal. Located on Spirit of Texas Drive. Covered parking matters in Austin — summer highs of 100°F+ are routine.

Park & Zoom — Around $12.95/day pre-booked self-park (or $16.95/day covered valet). Located on airport property at 9518 Hotel Drive — meaning shuttles skip public road traffic entirely. 3-minute ride to terminal.

The Parking Spot East / West — Around $13.25/day pre-booked. Both covered and uncovered options. 24/7 shuttles every 5–7 minutes. Loyalty rewards program. Choose East or West based on your approach direction.

Hilton Austin Airport — The only hotel located directly on AUS airport property at around $14.95/day pre-booked. 2-minute shuttle. Premium option for park-sleep-fly travelers.

Comfort Suites Austin Airport — Hotel parking at around $14.95/day pre-booked with gated lot and security cameras. Located 1.8 miles from the terminal. Verify shuttle hours before booking — limited overnight service.

Austin's airport is expanding rapidly to keep up with demand. Key 2026 milestones:

• Yellow Garage Phase 1 — A new seven-story smart parking garage adding 3,000 spaces opens in 2026, with full 7,100-space completion in 2027. This will nearly double on-airport covered parking capacity.

• West Infill & Checkpoint 4 — Completed February 2026. Added 80,000 sq ft, 3 new gates, and a fourth security checkpoint.

• South Terminal Closure — Permanently closed March 31, 2026. Allegiant and Frontier moved to Barbara Jordan Terminal. Site will be demolished for new midfield taxiways.

• Concourse B (Future) — Major new concourse on the former South Terminal site. Southwest will anchor with 18 gates. Timeline extends into the 2030s.

Until Yellow Garage opens, parking can fill up quickly during peak events. Pre-booking online (austintexas.gov/airport) is strongly recommended during SXSW (March), ACL (October), and F1 weekends.

AUS is uniquely event-driven. Three weeks dominate the calendar:

SXSW (March) — 400,000+ attendees over 10 days. Rideshare surge can hit 3–4x normal rates. Off-site parking is the safer financial play.

ACL Festival (October) — 75,000+ daily attendees over two weekends. Sometimes overlaps with F1 — when it does, AUS hits its absolute peak.

Formula 1 US Grand Prix (October) — 440,000+ attendees over race weekend. Circuit of the Americas is just 5 miles from AUS — the closest major airport to a Formula 1 venue in the United States. The October 2025 race set the airport's single-day TSA record.

Beyond events, AUS is also a tech-business airport. UT football weekends and Tesla / Apple / Google business travel keep weekday demand steady. For all of these peak windows, pre-book parking 1–2 weeks ahead and arrive 2.5–3 hours before departure.

• Pre-book online — Pre-booking saves $2–$5/day vs. drive-up rates. The Hilton, Comfort Suites, and FastPark & Relax all reward advance booking.

• Covered parking is worth it in summer — Austin summers see 100°F+ highs daily June–September. Covered options at FastPark & Relax, Park & Zoom, and The Parking Spot are worth the small premium.

• Free EV charging in the Blue Garage — On-airport Blue Garage offers FREE Level 2 EV charging for parked vehicles on the ground floor (Rows A and B). One of the few major U.S. airports with complimentary EV charging.

• The CRCF is connected to the terminal — Rental cars are inside the Consolidated Rental Car Facility, connected by covered walkway through the Blue Garage. No shuttle required.

• Allow extra time during peak events — During SXSW, ACL, and F1, security can exceed 45 minutes. Arrive 2.5–3 hours before domestic flights.

• Capital Metro Route 20 is cheap, slow — $1.75 per ride to downtown Austin in 35 minutes, 24/7. Best for solo budget travelers without time pressure.
