Miami International Airport (MIA) is the largest U.S. gateway for international passengers and the busiest international cargo airport in the country. 55.3 million passengers in 2025 — more than 70% international. American Airlines operates its largest hub worldwide here, and 90+ airlines serve 195 destinations.
Located 8 miles west of downtown Miami, MIA serves three terminals: North Terminal (Concourse D, American Airlines hub), Central Terminal (Concourses E, F, G — most international carriers), and South Terminal (Concourses H, J — international focus). All three are connected to the Miami Intermodal Center via the free MIA Mover automated people mover.
On-airport parking at MIA is moderate by major airport standards. Dolphin, Flamingo, and Ibis Garages all cap at $25/day. Valet runs $39/day. Economy Park & Ride is $12/day with limited capacity (350 spaces). Off-airport parking through Triply starts at around $6.95/day pre-booked — saving up to 80% compared to terminal garages.
Deal Airport Parking — Around $6.95/day pre-booked. 24/7 on-demand shuttle every 15 minutes. 2.1 miles out. Both self-park and valet at $6.95/day pre-booked.
Green Airport Parking — Around $6.99/day. The CLOSEST off-site lot at 1.1 miles. WARNING: Shuttle only runs 8 AM – 8 PM. Not for late-night or early-morning flights.
MIA Park Pro — Around $7.95/day. 24/7 on-demand shuttle. 6.1 miles out — furthest off-site lot but reliable. 4.5/5 rating.
La Quinta Inn & Suites Miami Airport East — Around $7.95/day. Hotel parking 2 miles out. Hourly shuttle 5 AM–10 PM.
EVEN Hotel Miami Airport — Around $7.99/day. Best covered off-site option. Covered garage parking 1.6 miles out. 24/7 on-demand shuttle. Excellent value for protected parking.
Hampton Inn Miami Airport West — Around $9.50/day. Highly rated (4.8/5). 5.4 miles out. First shuttle at 4:30 AM is good for early flights. On-demand pickup from airport.
MIA has direct rail access via the Metrorail Orange Line. The Miami Airport Station is at the Miami Intermodal Center, accessible via the free MIA Mover from the terminal Level 3 (every 2-3 minutes, 24/7).
Metrorail trips from MIA:
• Civic Center (hospitals, government) — 8 minutes
• Historic Overtown — 10 minutes
• Downtown Miami / Government Center — 12 minutes
• Brickell (financial district) — 15 minutes
• Coconut Grove — 20 minutes
• University of Miami — 25 minutes
• Dadeland South (southern terminus) — 34 minutes
At $2.25 per ride, Metrorail is dramatically cheaper than the $25–$35 metered taxi or $15–$25 rideshare to downtown. Service runs 5 AM to midnight, every 15 minutes. Daily fare cap: $5.65 with contactless payment.
For South Beach, Metrorail doesn't extend that far. The flat-rate taxi to South Beach is $35 — reliable and avoids surge pricing during Art Basel, Ultra Music Festival, and major events.
Brightline high-speed rail is available from MiamiCentral Station downtown — connect via the $12 Airport Connector Shuttle from MIA. Miami to Fort Lauderdale (~30 min) or Orlando (~3.5 hours).
MIA is in the middle of a massive $12 billion capital improvement program — the largest in airport history. Key 2026 milestones:
• Concourse D60 Expansion ($1B) — 17 new full-size gates replacing regional jet gates in American Airlines' North Terminal. Breaking ground 2027. Three-level extension for larger aircraft.
• Concourse K (South Terminal, 6 gates) — Broke ground 2025. Completion ~2029.
• International Arrivals Corridor (F-H) — Groundbreaking Fall 2026.
• Restroom Modernization Phase 2 — 50 restrooms across Concourses D, E, F, G, H, J. Completion Fall 2026.
• American Airlines Lounge Expansion — Nearly doubling lounge space at MIA. New Flagship Lounge plus expanded Admirals Club.
• New Four-Star Hotel — Hotel with business center and conference space within the airport complex.
The airport remains fully operational throughout. No parking closures expected.
MIA also offers an MIA Rewards program at mia.thanksagain.com — earn points on parking spend.
• Pre-book Economy Park & Ride — Only 350 spaces. Fills up during peak periods. Reserve at booking.mia-parking.com.
• EV charging at MIA is paid — Unlike free EV airports (BOS, IAD, MSP, IAH), MIA charges $0.38/kWh via ChargePoint at Ibis Garage (50 ports — most at the airport).
• Verify off-site shuttle hours — Green Airport Parking ($6.99/day) has NO shuttle outside 8 AM–8 PM. Use 24/7 lots like Deal Airport Parking, EVEN Hotel, or MIA Park Pro for early/late flights.
• MIA Mover is essential — Free automated people mover from Level 3 between Dolphin and Flamingo garages to the Miami Intermodal Center. Connects to Metrorail, Tri-Rail, rental cars, and bus connections every 2–3 minutes 24/7.
• Hurricane season — June through November. MIA has been shut down multiple times by major hurricanes. Travel insurance recommended.
• Use flat-rate taxi for South Beach — $35 flat rate avoids meter anxiety and surge pricing during Art Basel, Ultra Music Festival, Super Bowl weekends, and spring break.
• No on-site luggage storage — Use Bounce, LuggageHero, or Vertoe at downtown/Brickell/South Beach locations.
• Cell Phone Lot — 60 spaces at LeJeune Road & NW 31st Street. Free.
