Chicago O'Hare International Airport reclaimed the title of busiest airport in the United States in 2025 with 84.9 million passengers. It's also the second-busiest airport globally for aircraft movements (857,392 in 2025) and one of only two U.S. airports serving as a primary hub for two legacy carriers — United Airlines (Terminal 1) and American Airlines (Terminal 3).
ORD has 4 terminals (1, 2, 3, 5) connected by the free Airport Transit System (ATS) automated people mover. The new Concourse D ($1.3B, 19 gates) breaks ground in 2025 with vertical construction in spring 2026 and opening late 2028.
On-airport parking at ORD is among the most expensive in the country. Terminal Garages cap at $43/day. Economy Lot E is $17/day, Economy Lot F (covered) $22/day, and Economy Lot G $15/day with free ATS access. Off-airport parking through Triply starts at around $7.95/day pre-booked — saving up to 81% compared to terminal garages.

ORD has one of the best transit connections of any major U.S. airport: the CTA Blue Line runs 24/7 from a station in the lower level of Terminal 2 directly to downtown Chicago's Loop.
Travel times and fares from O'Hare:
• Rosemont — 5 minutes
• Wicker Park (Damen station) — 30 minutes
• The Loop (Clark/Lake, Jackson, Monroe) — 45 minutes
• UIC-Halsted — 40 minutes
Fare is $5.00 from O'Hare (a premium over the standard $2.50 CTA fare). Trains run every 3–8 minutes during peak, every 10–15 minutes midday, every 30 minutes overnight.
Why this matters: At $5.00, the Blue Line is dramatically cheaper than the $40–$55 taxi or $25–$45 rideshare to downtown. During rush hour, the Blue Line is often FASTER than driving (45 minutes vs 60–90 minutes on the Kennedy Expressway). 24/7 service means it works for late-night arrivals — a major advantage over airports without overnight rail.
For O'Hare → Midway connections, plan on extra time. The Blue and Orange lines don't connect directly downtown.
ORD is in the middle of ORDNext — the bold next phase of O'Hare 21, the largest terminal expansion in O'Hare history. Multiple billion-dollar projects underway:
• New Concourse D ($1.3B) — Brand new 19-gate concourse in a circular design inspired by the airport's original name (Orchard Field). Broke ground August 2025. Vertical construction spring 2026. Opening late 2028. 30,000 sq ft of lounge space plus restaurants, bars, retail.
• O'Hare Global Terminal — New centerpiece international terminal allowing international arrivals to connect seamlessly to domestic Terminals 1 and 3. Completion target ~2032.
• Satellite Concourse 2 — Additional concourse extending ORD's capacity. Timeline ~2034.
EV charging is also expanding: ORD has 130+ ports including the bp pulse Hub (40 ultrafast DC fast chargers, 400kW and 150kW, opened 2025), plus 48 Level 2 stations in the Terminal 5 garage.
Note: All rideshare pickups are centralized at Terminal 2 Upper Level — regardless of which terminal you arrive at. Take the ATS or underground walkway to get there.
• Pre-book on SpotHero or directly — Most off-site lots offer significant pre-book savings. Walk-up rates run $1–$5/day higher.
• Indoor/covered parking is worth it in Chicago winters — January–March can deliver 6+ inches of snow at a time. Park 'N Jet indoor ($10.99/day) and PreFlight indoor ($12.95/day) protect your vehicle.
• Use the Blue Line for downtown — At $5.00, even with the premium, it beats the $40+ taxi. 24/7 service. 45 minutes to the Loop.
• The ATS connects everything — Free Airport Transit System every 3–5 minutes 24/7 connects Terminals 1, 2, 3, 5, the Multi-Modal Facility (rental cars), Economy Lots, and Kiss 'n' Fly.
• Rideshare pickups at Terminal 2 only — All Uber, Lyft pickups are centralized at Terminal 2 Upper Level. Color-coded zones direct you. Take ATS from other terminals.
• Watch for winter delays — Major snowstorms can cause 200+ flight cancellations. Travel insurance recommended for January–February.
• Know your terminal — Terminal 1 = United. Terminal 3 = American. Terminal 5 = Delta, Southwest, Frontier, Spirit, internationals. Terminal 2 = Air Canada, JetBlue, United Express.
