Detroit Airport Parking — Delta's Second-Largest Hub

Detroit Metropolitan Wayne County Airport (DTW) is Delta Air Lines' second-largest hub worldwide. Located in Romulus, Michigan — 21 miles southwest of downtown Detroit — DTW handled 33.37 million passengers in 2025 across two terminals: McNamara Terminal (Delta and SkyTeam partners) and Evans Terminal (everyone else).

McNamara's Concourse A stretches nearly one mile (4,850 feet) — one of the longest airport terminal buildings in the world. The free ExpressTram runs the full length, and the iconic 744-foot Tunnel of Light underground walkway with synchronized LED lights and music connects Concourse A to Concourses B/C. Big Blue Deck serves Evans Terminal.

On-airport parking at DTW: Green Lots $14/day, Big Blue Deck $16-23/day, McNamara Garage $26-32/day, Valet $51/day. Off-airport parking through Triply starts at around $6/day pre-booked — saving up to 81% compared to McNamara Garage.

Best Off-Airport Parking Lots Near DTW

US Park (DTW) — The cheapest at around $6/day pre-booked. 30-shuttle fleet running 24/7 on-demand — one of the largest at any U.S. airport. 2.5 miles from DTW. Best overall value.

Airlines Parking (DTW) — Around $6.50/day pre-booked. One of the closest off-site lots at just 2 miles. 24/7 on-demand shuttle, ~5-minute ride to terminal.

Clarion Hotel Detroit Metro Airport — Around $10.99/day. Hotel parking 1.5 miles from DTW with 24/7 shuttle. Park-sleep-fly packages available with overnight stay.

Valet Connections (DTW) — Around $11/day pre-booked. Valet service at off-site prices. 24/7 shuttle every 5–10 minutes — among the most frequent at DTW. 3 miles in Taylor, MI.

Fast Lane Airport Parking (DTW) — Around $10/day pre-booked. Mid-range option 4 miles out. Weekly rate of ~$102 available.

Qwik Park (DTW) — Around $14/day pre-booked. The most full-service off-site lot — covered parking, valet option, plus car wash, oil change, and detailing services while you travel. Closest major off-site lot at 1.5 miles.

Two Terminals, Two Garages — Make Sure You Know Yours

DTW has two separate terminals that are NOT walkable to each other. You CANNOT walk between McNamara and Evans terminals — the free airport shuttle is the only connection (every 15–20 minutes, 24/7).

McNamara Terminal — Delta Air Lines hub. Also serves Aeromexico, Air France, KLM, Korean Air, WestJet (all SkyTeam partners). Direct walkway from McNamara Garage and the on-airport Westin Hotel.

Evans Terminal (formerly North Terminal — renamed April 4, 2022) — All non-SkyTeam carriers: Alaska, American, Delta? (no), Frontier, JetBlue, Lufthansa, Southwest, Spirit, Sun Country, United. Big Blue Deck connects directly.

Critical: Verify your terminal before heading to the airport. Use Google Flights or your airline's app. Off-site shuttles serve both terminals — let the driver know which one you need.

The free Massport-style on-airport shuttle runs every 10 minutes connecting McNamara, Evans, Green Lots, and the Westin Hotel — 24/7. Inside McNamara, the ExpressTram covers the mile-long Concourse A in seconds.

DTW's Quirks — Tunnel of Light and Limited Transit

Two distinctive features set DTW apart:

The Tunnel of Light — 744-foot underground pedestrian tunnel connecting Concourse A to Concourses B/C in McNamara Terminal. Features a synchronized LED light and music show. Travelers cycle through color patterns and music as they walk between concourses. One of the most photographed spots in any U.S. airport.

ExpressTram — Free automated people mover inside McNamara Terminal Concourse A. Spans nearly the full mile of concourse with three stations. Continuous operation during terminal hours. Essential for connections at the far ends of Concourse A.

What's NOT at DTW: rail transit. Detroit doesn't have an airport train. Public transit options are limited:

SMART Bus Routes 125 / 280 — $2 to downtown Detroit in 60–75 minutes. Cheapest but very slow.

AirRide / Michigan Flyer — $15 one-way to Ann Arbor in 45–50 minutes (best for University of Michigan travelers).

Rideshare — $30–$50 to downtown Detroit, $40–$60 to Ann Arbor.

Most travelers will use rideshare or rental cars from DTW.

Tips for Parking at DTW

Confirm your terminal — McNamara (Delta/SkyTeam) vs Evans (everyone else). Wrong terminal = 15-minute shuttle to fix it.

Pre-book online — US Park drops from $8 walk-up to $6 pre-booked; Airlines Parking from $8.50 to $6.50; Valet Connections from $12 to $11.

Free EV charging at DTW — McNamara Garage Level 6 and Big Blue Deck long-term sections both have free Level 2 charging. 8 stations total — limited availability so arrive early.

Westin is on-airport — Connected directly to McNamara Terminal. Best park-sleep-fly option at DTW for early Delta flights.

Watch for lake-effect snow November–March — DTW averages 33+ inches of snow annually. Lake-effect bands can produce sudden, intense snowfall. The airport rarely closes entirely but 1–4 hour delays are common during winter storms.

Polar vortex events — Detroit is vulnerable to extreme cold (-10°F to -20°F wind chill) several times per winter. Mechanical issues with aircraft and ground equipment cause delays even without heavy snow.

Rental cars are inside both terminals — All 8 major rental car companies have counters in the Ground Transportation Centers of both terminals. No shuttle to a separate facility — a major convenience advantage.
