Harry Reid International Airport (LAS, formerly McCarran) handled a record 58.4 million passengers in 2024. Located 5 miles south of downtown Las Vegas — and just 1.5 miles from the Strip's southern hotels (Mandalay Bay, Luxor, MGM Grand) — LAS is one of the closest major airports to a major destination corridor in the United States.
Southwest Airlines is the largest focus city operator, with Spirit, Frontier, and Allegiant also operating significant focus city operations. Two terminals (Terminal 1 with 96 gates across Concourses A, B, C, D and Terminal 3 with Concourse E for international and full-service domestic).
On-airport parking at LAS is reasonable. Economy Lots are $12/day, Long-Term Garages $18/day, Short-Term Garages cap at $36/day. Off-airport parking through Triply starts at around $5/day pre-booked — saving up to 86% compared to short-term garages. For a 7-day trip for 2 travelers, off-site parking saves $84–$130 vs the Long-Term Garage.

Las Vegas's event-driven economy creates extreme rideshare surge pricing during specific weeks:
The Big Spikes:
• CES (January) — 130,000+ tech industry attendees
• SEMA (November) — 160,000+ aftermarket auto attendees
• Super Bowl weekend (February) — 2024 was a Las Vegas Super Bowl
• UFC Fight Nights — Major events at T-Mobile Arena and Allegiant Stadium
• Formula 1 Las Vegas Grand Prix (November) — Strip becomes a racetrack
• New Year's Eve — One of the busiest single nights in U.S. travel
During these weeks, rideshare can surge 3–5x normal rates. A normal $15 UberX to mid-Strip can become $60–$90.
Pre-booked parking eliminates this risk entirely. If you're staying off-Strip, driving from Southern California, or worried about getting back to the airport during a peak event, pre-booked parking is the financially safer play.
For non-event weeks, rideshare to mid-Strip ($12–$25) often beats parking for trips under 3 days. But always check both Uber and Lyft — prices can differ.
LAS is in the middle of multi-billion-dollar capital improvements:
• Terminal 1 Rebuild — Converting the oldest terminal to a pier-style concourse, expanding from 39 to ~65 gates using the former Terminal 2 footprint. Multi-year phased construction keeping existing gates open.
• Terminal 3 Ticketing Reconfiguration — Adding ~30 check-in counters and curbside self-bag-drop lanes. Terminal 3 will be redesignated as Terminal 2 once complete.
• Baggage Processing Expansion — Major upgrade to baggage handling systems. Completion expected 2026.
• Paradise Road High-T Bypass Lane — New southbound dedicated lane improving airport access road traffic flow. Construction started 2025.
• Reserved Parking — Launched 2025. Guaranteed parking spot in Terminal 1 garage ($28/day) or Terminal 3 garage ($21/day). Useful during CES, major fights, and holiday weekends when lots can fill.
The airport remains fully operational throughout. Reserved Parking is worth booking during peak events.
• Pre-book during major events — CES, SEMA, Super Bowl, UFC fight weekends, F1 Grand Prix, and NYE all spike demand. Reserved Parking ($21–$28/day) guarantees a spot when on-airport lots can fill.
• Slot machines in the terminals — LAS is one of only two U.S. airports with gambling. 1,300+ slot machines and video poker terminals throughout both terminals (21+).
• Sunday is the worst day — Sunday afternoon/evening at LAS is the year's busiest departure window. Convention closing days create massive lines. Allow 2.5–3 hours.
• TSA PreCheck enrollment on-site — Terminal 1 Level 2 near the Aviation Museum. Walk-in enrollment, 10-minute process, Mon–Sun 6 AM–8 PM.
• Heat is operationally dangerous — At 115°F+, airlines reduce passenger loads and cargo weight (thinner hot air = less lift). Smaller regional jets are most affected. Morning flights are most reliable June–September.
• Mind the airport surcharge — Rideshare adds $4.50 to all LAS pickups; taxis add $2. Standard surge applies on top.
• No rail to the Strip — The Las Vegas Monorail does NOT extend to LAS. Closest station is MGM Grand, 2 miles away. Rideshare is the dominant transport option.
• Tipping culture — Vegas is a tipping town. $5 is standard for valet, shuttle drivers, and bellmen.
