Phoenix Sky Harbor International Airport (PHX) is Arizona's primary commercial airport and a top-10 U.S. airport by passenger volume — 51.6 million in 2025. American Airlines operates its largest hub outside Dallas-Fort Worth here, and Southwest Airlines uses PHX as its busiest focus city. Two terminals: Terminal 3 (John McCain — 27 gates serving Delta, United, Alaska, Frontier) and Terminal 4 (Barry M. Goldwater — 92 gates with American, Southwest, JetBlue, and international carriers).
The free PHX Sky Train automated people mover is the backbone of ground transportation — connecting Terminal 3, Terminal 4, East Economy Parking, the 44th St Valley Metro Rail station, the 24th St station, and the Rental Car Center. Trains run 24/7 every 3–5 minutes.
On-airport parking at PHX ranges from $14/day (East Economy Uncovered) to $43/day (Valet). Terminal Garages cap at $33/day. Off-airport parking through Triply starts at around $3.50/day pre-booked — saving up to 92% compared to terminal garages.
Howard Johnson Airport Downtown — Around $3.50/day pre-booked. The cheapest off-site option at any major U.S. airport. Hotel parking 3.5 miles out. Hourly shuttle 24/7. Uncovered lot — vehicle exposed to Arizona heat.
PHX Park Place — Around $5.99/day pre-booked. Mid-range option 2.5 miles out. Free shuttle. Uncovered.
The Parking Spot South (formerly Blue Sky) — Around $7.25/day pre-booked. Best value covered off-site at PHX. 3-minute shuttle ride. Ideal for Southeast Valley travelers (Chandler, Gilbert, Ahwatukee).
PreFlight Airport Parking — Around $7.99/day pre-booked. Both covered and uncovered options. EV charging available — rare for off-site lots. 24/7 shuttle. 4.5/5 rating.
The Parking Spot 1 (Washington St) — Around $11.95/day pre-booked. Closest off-site lot at 1.5 miles. All 800 spaces are covered — critical in Arizona summer (110°F+). 24/7 shuttle every 5–10 minutes. 4.7/5 rating — best at PHX.
The Parking Spot 2 (Van Buren St) — Around $11.95/day pre-booked. Best for Scottsdale/Paradise Valley travelers. Both covered and uncovered options.
Phoenix summers are operationally dangerous for vehicles. From June through September, daily highs regularly exceed 110°F (43°C) and can hit 115–120°F. Inside an uncovered car, temperatures can reach 130–150°F.
Covered parking is worth the premium in summer. Options:
• On-airport: East Economy Garage ($16/day) — covered, with PHX Sky Train access
• On-airport: Terminal Garages ($33/day) — covered, direct walk
• Off-site: The Parking Spot 1 ($11.95/day pre-booked) — all 800 spaces covered
• Off-site: The Parking Spot South ($7.25/day pre-booked) — covered
There's also a real travel impact: at 115°F+, airlines reduce passenger loads and cargo weight because thinner hot air reduces aircraft lift. Smaller regional jets are most affected. Afternoon flights (2–5 PM) are most likely to face heat-related delays or weight restrictions. Morning flights are most reliable June–September.
Monsoon season (July–September) also brings sudden dust storms (haboobs) and microbursts. Flash flooding can close access roads. Travel insurance is recommended for summer.
PHX is in the middle of a major expansion program:
• Terminal 3 North 2 Concourse ($326M) — 6 new passenger gates, new lounge, food/beverage, Camelback Mountain views. Construction began April 2025. Completion 2027.
• Terminal 3 to Terminal 4 Pedestrian Bridge — Post-security walking connection between terminals, eliminating the need to re-clear security when transferring. Part of the North Concourse project.
• Terminal 4 Modernization — Ongoing concession, restroom, and gate upgrades.
• West Terminal Environmental Review — Site review through 2031 for a future third terminal. Construction could begin 2032 with opening 2037–2038.
• Touchless ID — Launched at PHX in February 2026. Facial recognition allows TSA PreCheck travelers to skip showing ID.
The PHX Sky Train Stage 2 was completed December 2022 — connecting to the Rental Car Center and 24th Street station. The full 24/7 system now connects everything: terminals, parking, transit, and rental cars.
• Pre-book covered parking in summer — June–September heat can cause 130°F+ inside parked cars. The Parking Spot 1 ($11.95/day, all covered) and East Economy Garage ($16/day) are worth the premium vs uncovered.
• PHX Sky Train is essential — Free, every 3–5 minutes, 24/7. Connects Terminal 3, Terminal 4, East Economy, 44th St Metro station, 24th St station, and Rental Car Center. Use it instead of driving between terminals.
• Valley Metro Rail to downtown — $2.00 per ride. Take Sky Train to 44th St/Washington station, then transfer to Metro Rail. 20 minutes to downtown Phoenix; 12 minutes to Tempe (ASU).
• Scottsdale needs rideshare — Valley Metro Rail does NOT serve Scottsdale. For Old Town Scottsdale, North Scottsdale, or Paradise Valley, use rideshare ($20–$35).
• Watch monsoon dust storms (July–Sep) — Sudden visibility drops can cause ground stops. Usually 30–60 minutes.
• Spring training peak — February–March brings Cactus League fans to Phoenix. Allow extra time for parking and security on weekends.
• Touchless ID for TSA PreCheck — Launched February 2026. Facial recognition skips ID checks if you're enrolled.
