San Francisco International Airport (SFO) is the primary airport for the Bay Area — 54.5 million passengers per year, 13th busiest in the U.S. and 2nd busiest in California. United Airlines operates its largest hub from Terminal 3 and the International Terminal. SFO was one of the first U.S. airports with direct BART rail connection.
SFO has 4 terminals: Harvey Milk Terminal 1 (renamed in 2019), Terminal 2, Terminal 3, and the International Terminal. They're connected by the free AirTrain people mover running 24/7 every 4 minutes.
On-airport parking at SFO is among the most expensive at any U.S. airport. Domestic Garage is $39/day, International Garage $37/day, Long-Term Garage $27/day, ParkFAST premium reserved $60/day, ParkVALET $45/day. Off-airport parking through Triply starts at around $8/day pre-booked — saving up to 87% compared to terminal garages.
Note: SFO's off-site parking market is more limited than other major airports. Many travelers opt for the on-airport Long-Term Garage ($27/day) given the free AirTrain Blue Line connection.
Long-Term Garage (on-airport) — $27/day. Connected via free AirTrain Blue Line to Level 5 of all terminals. Most affordable on-airport option for trips of 3+ days. Free EV charging in Green Vehicle Parking Zones.
Off-site lots — Several private operators serve SFO via free shuttle from rates around $8/day pre-booked. Pre-book through Triply for guaranteed space and the lowest rates.
Hotel options on-airport: Grand Hyatt at SFO is connected to AirTrain — convenient for park-sleep-fly travelers, though parking rates are premium.
BART is the major alternative to parking: $11.80 from downtown SF, ~30 minutes, fully integrated into the International Terminal Level 3.
SFO has direct BART rail connection — one of the few U.S. airports with full integration. The SFO BART Station is on Level 3 of the International Terminal, with free AirTrain Blue Line to all other terminals.
Travel from SFO via BART (fares effective January 1, 2026):
• Daly City — 15 minutes, $10.80
• Powell St / Montgomery St / Embarcadero (downtown SF) — 30 minutes, $11.80
• Millbrae (Caltrain connection) — 4 minutes, $5.85
• Oakland City Center — 43 minutes, $12.20
• Downtown Berkeley — 54 minutes, $12.60
• Fremont — 64 minutes, $15.40 (transfer at Balboa Park)
Combined Yellow + Red Line: every ~10 minutes weekday peak to downtown SF. After 9 PM and weekends: every ~20 minutes.
Important: Sunday BART does not start until 8:08 AM — early Sunday morning flights require alternative transport. Late-night Millbrae shuttle runs every 15 minutes after 9 PM.
Construction alert: train control modernization causes 30-minute delays some Sunday-Thursday nights between Millbrae and SFO through Summer 2026.
For Caltrain connections, transfer at Millbrae (4-minute BART ride from SFO). Caltrain reaches Palo Alto, San Jose Diridon, and points down the Peninsula.
Terminal 3 AirTrain station has been closed since November 4, 2025 for the Terminal 3 West renovation ($2.6 billion, completion expected 2029). Use the "Terminals 2 & 3" station and walk to Terminal 3 gates. Reopening expected 2027.
The AirTrain has two lines:
• Red Line (clockwise loop, ~9 min) — Terminal 2 → International G → Garage G/BART → International A → Harvey Milk Terminal 1 → Garage A → Grand Hyatt at SFO
• Blue Line (counterclockwise loop, ~25 min) — All Red Line stops PLUS West Field Road, Rental Car Center, and Long-Term Parking. Blue Line is the ONLY way to reach Rental Car Center and Long-Term Parking.
What else to know about SFO in 2026:
• Skycharger Hub — 24 DC fast-charging ports at 400 kW are under development for the Rental Car Center. Will support electric rideshare drivers (Uber/Lyft) under California's Clean Miles Standard.
• Waymo autonomous vehicles began operating at SFO in January 2026.
• All rideshare drivers must display the light blue SFO Airport placard (effective May 1, 2025).
• Rideshare pickup zones — Domestic Terminals: Level 5 of Domestic Parking Garage. International Terminal: center island of Departures-level roadway. Premium services (Uber Black SUV, WAV) pick up curbside.
• Use BART unless you really need a car — At $11.80 to downtown SF, BART is dramatically cheaper than the $55–$75 taxi or $25–$40 rideshare to downtown. Direct rail station inside the International Terminal.
• Free EV charging in all garages — SFO provides complimentary Level 1 and Level 2 EV charging in Green Vehicle Parking Zones across all garages. Free with paid parking. Long-Term Garage 4th floor has up to 104 ChargePoint Level 2 ports.
• Cell Phone Waiting Lot is free — Off North Access Road, near airport entrance. Maximum 60 minutes (longer than most airports).
• Long-Term Garage is your best on-airport bet — At $27/day with free AirTrain Blue Line access, it's significantly cheaper than terminal garages. Reserve in advance.
• Watch for fog (May Gray, June Gloom) — Pacific marine layer brings morning fog from May–June. SFO's parallel runways are only 750 ft apart, so fog can drop arrival capacity from 60/hour to 25–30/hour. Morning flights face the most delays.
• Sunday BART starts at 8:08 AM — For early Sunday flights, plan rideshare or alternative transport.
• All terminals connected post-security — Terminals 1, 2, 3 are connected airside. Terminal 3 connector to International Terminal exists. You can move between most terminals without re-clearing security.
