BWI Marshall Airport sits 9 miles south of downtown Baltimore and 30 miles northeast of Washington, D.C., serving both metro areas. Named after Supreme Court Justice Thurgood Marshall, BWI handled 27.06 million passengers in 2024. Southwest Airlines operates roughly 70% of passenger traffic — making BWI the largest Southwest focus city on the East Coast and one of the cheapest major airports in the D.C./Baltimore region.
On-airport parking at BWI is reasonably priced compared to peer airports. Long-Term Parking Lots are $11/day, the Daily Garage is $16/day, Express Parking is $14/day, and the Hourly Garage maxes at $30/day. Off-airport parking through Triply starts at around $5.95/day pre-booked — saving up to 65% compared to the Daily Garage.
For a 7-day trip for 2 travelers, off-site parking saves $60–$70 vs the Daily Garage. And BWI offers FREE Level 2 EV charging in the Hourly and Daily Garages — a perk most major airports don't match.
DoubleTree by Hilton BWI Airport — The cheapest pre-booked rate at around $5.95/day. 2.5 miles from BWI. Hotel lot with free shuttle. Park-sleep-fly packages also available.
FastPark 2 (BWI) — Around $6.50/day pre-booked. Covered parking just 1.2 miles from the terminal — 2-minute shuttle ride is the fastest at BWI. 24/7 shuttle.
FastPark & Relax (BWI) — Around $6.95/day pre-booked. Covered and uncovered options. 1.5 miles out, 3-minute shuttle. 24/7 shuttle every 5–10 minutes. Closest off-site lot with covered parking.
The Parking Spot East / West — Around $7.50/day. Both East (Camp Meade Road) and West (Ridge Road, former Econopark) locations. Free 24/7 on-demand shuttle every 5–10 minutes. Free water bottle on departure.

BWI is one of the best-connected airports in the U.S. by rail. The BWI Marshall Airport Rail Station sits adjacent to the terminal with a free 24/7 shuttle running every 10–15 minutes between the station and the terminal.
The rail station serves:
• MARC Penn Line — $8 to Washington Union Station (45 min), $5 to Baltimore Penn Station (20 min). Limited Saturday service, no Sunday service.
• Amtrak — Northeast Regional ($16–$40 to D.C. in 25–35 min), Acela ($30–$80 to D.C.), plus the Crescent, Palmetto, Vermonter routes. Reaches Philadelphia in 1.5 hours, NYC in 2.5 hours.
Direct from the terminal — no shuttle needed:
• MTA Light Rail at the airport stops at $2 to downtown Baltimore in 30 minutes (Camden Yards, Inner Harbor, Convention Center).
For D.C.-bound travelers, MARC at $8 is dramatically cheaper than the $80–$100 taxi or $55–$85 rideshare from BWI. For Baltimore-bound travelers, Light Rail at $2 beats the $25–$40 rideshare. This rail connectivity is BWI's biggest advantage — a couple can reach D.C. round trip for $32 vs $200+ in rideshare or taxi.
BWI's largest-ever capital project — the $520 million Concourse A/B Connector — opened January 9, 2026. Highlights:
• 142,000 sq ft of new construction + 78,000 sq ft of renovations — Direct single-level route between Concourses A and B. No more backtracking through the main terminal to switch concourses.
• 5 relocated/modernized gates — Expanded holdrooms, new concessions, upgraded restrooms.
• New in-line baggage handling system — Processes 3,500 bags/hour, up from 2,100.
• Potential Southwest Airlines Lounge — Southwest is "actively pursuing" adding a lounge in the new connector space, which would be among Southwest's first dedicated lounges nationwide.
Both Concourses A and B are exclusive Southwest Airlines territory. The connector is now fully open and operational with only minor finishing work and concession buildouts ongoing.
• Pre-book online for the best rates — DoubleTree at $5.95/day pre-booked is the lowest. Walk-up rates run $7.95–$10/day at most off-site lots.
• Free EV charging at BWI — Hourly and Daily Garages both offer free Level 2 charging on the ground floor. DC fast chargers via BGE EVsmart available at the Cell Phone Lot. One of the best EV charging deals at any major U.S. airport.
• Use rail to skip parking — For Baltimore travelers, Light Rail at $2 from the terminal beats every parking option. For D.C. travelers, MARC at $8 beats parking unless your trip is over a week.
• Verify shuttle hours at hotel lots — DoubleTree, Aloft, and Country Inn shuttles run on schedule rather than 24/7 on-demand. Check hours match your flight times.
• Southwest dominance affects timing — Morning Southwest departure banks (5–7 AM) are the busiest hours. Allow extra time for security during peak periods.
• Watch for winter storms — BWI is in the Mid-Atlantic snow belt. Nor'easters in January–February can cause 4–12 hour delays or full-day cancellations. Travel insurance recommended for winter travel.
