And there's a hidden cost EWR travelers should know about: the AirTrain access fee. Public transit riders pay $8.75/person at the RailLink station to connect to NJ Transit. Hilton Newark Airport Parking — Closest bookable lot at 1 mile, in Elizabeth. Free 24/7 shuttle every 20 minutes, with live tracking through Track My Shuttle (hotel code 1170). CCTV-monitored lot and a Starbucks on site. On your return, bring your reservation receipt and gate-issued ticket to the front desk for validation before you get your car.

Renaissance Newark Airport Hotel — Hotel lot 1.1 miles out. Shuttle runs 24/7: every 15 minutes from 4 AM to midnight, every 30 minutes overnight. Fenced, camera-monitored, 24/7 front desk.

Apex Airport Parking — Valet lot 1.3 miles out on Spring St in Elizabeth — you leave your keys and staff park your car. Free 24/7 shuttle every 10 minutes. Size surcharges: small SUV $5/day, large SUV $7/day, truck $10/day. Most of the price is paid at the lot, so the amount charged online is only part of the total — the lot page shows the split.

ARB Parking Newark — Lot 1.3 miles out on Haynes Ave in Newark. Free 24/7 shuttle every 10–15 minutes; call only after you have your luggage. Valet and a 24/7 front desk.

Maas Parking Newark — Lot 1.3 miles out on Frelinghuysen Ave. Free 24/7 shuttle every 15 minutes; check in at the front desk. Most of the price is paid at the lot.

EWR Airport Parking — Lot 1.3 miles out at 819 Spring St, Elizabeth. Free 24/7 on-demand shuttle; arrive 30–45 minutes before you want to leave, as the shuttle may be full. Oversized vehicles (all trucks, Expeditions, Suburbans) pay $3/day extra on site; minivans and SUVs count as regular size. Most of the price is paid at the lot, and late pickups are charged accordingly.

Motel 6 Newark Airport — Motel lot 1.3 miles out. Free shuttle 24 hours, every 15 minutes; call for your airport pickup, and allow at least 30 minutes for check-in. Trucks, vans and larger SUVs must be booked under the large-vehicle option. Most of the price is paid at the lot.

Courtyard Newark Liberty — Hotel lot 1.4 miles out. Shuttle 24/7 every 30 minutes, on the hour and half-hour, first-come first-served. Return pickups are from Level P-4 at 15 and 45 minutes past the hour.

Courtyard by Marriott Newark Elizabeth — Hotel lot 1.9 miles out on International Blvd. Gated, camera-monitored lot. Shuttle 24/7 every 30 minutes; wheelchair-accessible shuttle on request in advance.

Embassy Suites Hilton Newark Airport — Gated self-park lot 1.9 miles out, with 24-hour on-site security. Shuttle every 30 minutes (about a 15-minute ride), with luggage help; airport pickups are at Lot P4, reached by AirTrain. Confirm the latest shuttle times with the hotel.

Snap Parking — Eight-story indoor garage 2.1 miles out — rare covered parking at EWR. Valet-style: pull in and a shuttle van takes you to the airport, 24 hours on demand. EV charging and car wash available.

Red Carpet Inn — Motel lot 3.8 miles out in Irvington with no shuttle — only worth it with a drop-off or rideshare.

EWR's 1996 monorail AirTrain is being replaced with a new $3.5 billion cable-driven system (opening 2030). Construction broke ground October 2025 and creates significant 2026 traveler impacts:

• January 15 – September 29, 2026: AirTrain suspended on weekdays from 5 AM to 3 PM. Free shuttle buses replace AirTrain during closures.

• September 30 – October 30, 2026: Full closure — shuttle buses only.

• October 30, 2026 onwards: To be announced.

The replacement shuttles connect terminals, P4, RailLink station, and the rental car facility — but they take longer than AirTrain. Allow 15–30 extra minutes for transit during 2026.

For travelers using off-site parking with direct terminal shuttles, AirTrain closures don't affect you (Embassy Suites and Courtyard Newark Liberty pick up at P4, so check how their return pickups work during closures). This is one of the strongest arguments for off-site parking at EWR in 2026 — your shuttle goes directly to the terminal regardless of AirTrain status.

New Terminal A opened January 2023 — a $2.7 billion replacement that won Skytrax's "best new airport terminal" award in 2024 and a 5-star Skytrax rating. 33 gates across 3 concourses, all served by a single central security checkpoint, so passengers can move freely between concourses post-security.

What's coming:

Important: Terminal B has SEPARATE security checkpoints at each concourse (B1, B2, B3) — passengers cannot move freely between B1, B2, and B3 without re-clearing security. Verify your gate before entering security at Terminal B.

• Verify Terminal B concourse before security — Terminal B has separate checkpoints at B1, B2, and B3. If you go through the wrong one, you'll need to exit and re-clear security.

• Check vehicle-size surcharges — Apex charges $5–$10/day extra for SUVs and trucks, EWR Airport Parking $3/day for oversized vehicles, and Motel 6 requires its large-vehicle option for trucks and vans. Red Carpet Inn has no shuttle.

• No flat-rate taxi to Manhattan — Unlike JFK, EWR has metered taxis only. Manhattan trips run $80–$120 with tolls. Rideshare ranges $55–$90 (no surge) up to $100–$180 during peak hours.
