Charlotte Douglas International Airport (CLT) is American Airlines' second-largest hub and the busiest connecting hub on the U.S. East Coast. The airport handled 53.6 million passengers in 2025 and is ranked 7th-busiest in the United States. Concourse E is home to the largest regional jet operation in the world.
CLT's defining feature is its single-terminal design with five concourses (A, B, C, D, E). Unlike most major hubs, you can walk between any two gates without trams or people movers. American Airlines and American Eagle dominate operations.
On-airport parking rates climbed in March 2026: the Hourly Deck is now $35/day, Daily Decks $28/day, Express Decks $24/day, Daily North $18/day, Long Term Lots $14/day, and Valet $50/day. Off-airport parking through Triply starts at around $5/day pre-booked — saving up to 90% compared to the Hourly Deck.
Red Lion Hotel Charlotte Airport — The cheapest at around $5/day. Hotel lot 3.5 miles out. Verify shuttle hours before booking — may not run 24/7.
Country Inn & Suites Charlotte Airport — Around $6.50/day pre-booked. 24-hour shuttle is a major advantage over many CLT off-site lots with limited hours. Gated lot with security cameras.
Microtel Inn & Suites Charlotte Airport — Around $6.95/day pre-booked. Hotel parking 2 miles from CLT. Free airport shuttle. Pre-booking saves ~$1/day.
DoubleTree by Hilton Charlotte Airport — Around $7.95/day pre-booked. Full-service Hilton hotel 4.5 miles out. Reliable Hilton brand with airport shuttle.
The Parking Spot CLT — Around $9.95/day pre-booked. The best-known off-site brand at CLT — just 0.8 miles from the airport. 24/7 shuttle every 5–10 minutes. Both covered and uncovered options. EV charging stations on-site. 4.4/5 rating.
Royal Inn CLT Airport Parking — Around $4.99/day. WARNING: No shuttle service included. You must arrange your own transportation to the terminal. Only suitable if you have someone to drop you off.
CLT has direct bus service to Uptown Charlotte via the CATS Airport Sprinter at $2.20 per ride — dramatically cheaper than the $25–$35 rideshare or metered taxi. The Sprinter runs every 20 minutes weekdays, every 30 minutes evenings and weekends, from approximately 5 AM to 1 AM.
The Sprinter takes 25–35 minutes to reach Uptown via the Charlotte Transportation Center (CTC). At CTC, you can transfer to the LYNX Blue Line light rail (also $2.20) to reach:
• South End — nightlife and restaurants
• Pineville — south Charlotte
• University City / UNC Charlotte — north Charlotte
For Uptown-bound travelers, the Sprinter is time-competitive with rideshare during rush hour. A round trip costs $4.40 per person — far less than even one day of any on-airport parking option. CLT is also convenient for cross-border South Carolina travelers (Fort Mill, Rock Hill, Spartanburg) who often drive in to fly.
CLT completed its $608 million Terminal Lobby Expansion in September 2025 — adding 370,000 sq ft and a dramatic 150,000-sq-ft curbside canopy (one of the largest airport canopies in the U.S.).
What's still under construction:
• Fourth Parallel Runway (10,000 ft) — Halfway through construction. Scheduled opening fall 2027. Runway redesignation begins May 2026.
• Concourse E Renovations — New Terrazzo flooring, gate renumbering, updated wayfinding, new moving walkways. Completion March 2027.
• Concourse D Improvements — Restroom renovations, electrical upgrades, new carpeting. Completion late 2026.
The airport remains fully operational. Concourse E renovations may cause temporary gate changes — verify your gate before heading to the airport.
• Pre-book on parkCLT.com — 16,000 of 25,000 on-airport spaces are reservable online. Pre-booking is recommended during holidays and NASCAR weekends.
• Single terminal = walkable — All five concourses are walkable. No trams or people movers needed. Connecting passengers can walk between any two gates in under 15 minutes.
• Verify off-site shuttle hours — Royal Inn ($4.99/day) has NO shuttle. Red Lion's shuttle hours are limited. The Parking Spot and Country Inn run 24/7. Always confirm before booking.
• Watch for ice storms in winter — Charlotte rarely gets snow but freezing rain and ice storms (January–February) can shut down the airport for 1–2 days. Travel insurance recommended.
• NASCAR weekends spike traffic — Coca-Cola 600 (May), Bank of America Roval 400 (October), and other Charlotte Motor Speedway events create significant airport surges. Book parking ahead and arrive earlier than usual.
• All concourses connected post-security — You can clear at any checkpoint and walk to any gate. Checkpoint 2 (near Concourse C) is the primary TSA PreCheck location.
