TPA pioneered the landside/airside terminal concept in 1971 — a central Main Terminal building handles ticketing, baggage claim, and ground transportation, while four separate airside satellite buildings house the gates (Airsides A, C, E, F). Automated People Movers (APMs) connect the Main Terminal to each Airside in under 2 minutes. This design became a model for airports worldwide.

On-airport parking at TPA is one of the best deals at any major airport. The Economy Garage is $12/day ($10/day pre-booked online), Long-Term Garage $20/day ($18 online), Short-Term $24/day, Valet $32/day. Off-airport parking through Triply starts at around $4.99/day pre-booked — saving up to 84% compared to short-term.

Safeway Parking — Around $4.99/day pre-booked. Cheapest off-site rate at TPA. WARNING: No shuttle service. You must arrange your own ride to the terminal — best for travelers who can rideshare cheaply or get dropped off. Covered parking option (rare among Tampa off-site lots).

Fairfield Inn & Suites Tampa Fairgrounds — Around $5.99/day pre-booked. Budget hotel parking 4.5 miles east of TPA. Up to 10 days included. Confirm shuttle hours.

The Godfrey Hotel & Cabanas Tampa — Around $6/day pre-booked. Hotel parking 2.5 miles out. Confirm shuttle schedule for early/late flights.

Holiday Inn Tampa Westshore — Around $6.99/day pre-booked. Up to 21 days of parking included — ideal for extended trips or cruises. Hotel shuttle service.

DoubleTree by Hilton Tampa Airport - Westshore — Around $7.95/day pre-booked. 24/7 complimentary airport shuttle — only off-site lot at TPA with 24/7 shuttle. DoubleTree brand reliability.

Hyatt Place Tampa Airport/Westshore — Around $7.95/day pre-booked. Hotel parking 1.7 miles out. Shuttle every 30 minutes 4–8 AM, on-demand after 8 AM. Early 4 AM shuttle covers most morning flights.

TPA pioneered an airport design that minimizes walking distances and keeps security screening at airside entrances rather than at a central checkpoint. Here's how it works:

1. Park in any garage (Short-Term, Long-Term, Economy, or Valet)

2. Check in at the central Main Terminal

3. Take the SkyConnect APM (free, every 2 minutes, 24/7) to your airside

4. Clear security at the airside checkpoint (TSA PreCheck and CLEAR available)

5. Walk to your gate — under 5 minutes from APM to gate

For travelers, this means:

• No long terminal walks — your airside is always close to the APM

• Multiple security checkpoints spread the load across all four airsides

• Easy connections — most travelers go from car to gate in 30–40 minutes

What's coming:

• New Airside D ($1.528 billion) — 16-gate state-of-the-art international arrivals and departures facility. Broke ground December 2024. Design hit 100% completion February 2026. Delta Air Lines is the anchor tenant and will relocate from Airside E. Modern TSA checkpoint, new CBP facility, new Delta Sky Club, second lounge space on mezzanine. Completion late 2028.

• Main Terminal Ticketing Level Expansion ($285.7M) — Designed to handle projected 38 million passengers. Initial $25.4M contract awarded April 2026. Full completion Q4 2029.

• Cell Phone Lot upgrades — New EV charging, pet relief area, upgraded arrivals/departures information board.

The airport remains fully operational throughout. Airside D construction is on the perimeter and doesn't affect current operations.

• Pre-book online for $10/day Economy — TPA's Economy Garage is already cheap at $12/day, but pre-booking at park.tampaairport.com drops it to $10/day. Excellent value with free SkyConnect to terminal.

• Free EV charging in all garages — Short-Term has Level 2 (faster), Long-Term and Economy have Level 1. Cell Phone Lot also has Level 2.

• First hour free in Short-Term and Long-Term garages — Both have free first hour. Short-Term is ideal for pickups/drop-offs, but Long-Term offers better daily rates ($18 online vs $24 short-term).

• Verify off-site shuttle hours — DoubleTree runs 24/7 (only one). Hyatt Place runs every 30 min 4-8 AM, on-demand after. Holiday Inn and Fairfield Inn have limited hours. Safeway Parking has NO shuttle.

• SkyConnect is free and fast — Free 1.5-mile APM connects Main Terminal (Levels 1-3) to Economy Parking and Rental Car Center. Every 2 minutes, 24/7, under 5-minute ride.

• TPA flat-rate taxi — $35 to downtown Tampa or to Port Tampa Bay (cruise terminal). Reliable and avoids surge.

• Watch for hurricanes June–November — Florida's Gulf Coast is hurricane-prone. Travel insurance recommended.

• Cruise + fly — TPA is 7 miles from Port Tampa Bay (cruise terminal) — $35 flat-rate taxi. Good combo for cruise passengers.
