Washington Dulles International Airport (IAD) is the Washington, D.C. region's primary international airport, handling all long-haul international flights for the metro area. It's United Airlines' East Coast hub and one of the few U.S. airports without a perimeter rule or slot controls — meaning airlines can fly anywhere in the world with no restrictions.
Located 26 miles west of downtown D.C., IAD is significantly farther from the city than DCA (5 miles). On-airport parking is among the most reasonable in the D.C. region: Garages 1 & 2 are $21/day, Economy Lot is $15/day, Terminal Lot $32/day, Valet $39/day. Off-airport parking through Triply starts at around $5.95/day pre-booked — saving up to 75% compared to terminal lots.
For an 8-day trip for 2 travelers, off-site parking saves $88–$120 vs Garage 1/2.
Hyatt Regency Dulles Airport — Around $5.95/day pre-booked. 1.9 miles from IAD with 24/7 shuttle (every 30 minutes daytime, on-demand overnight). 4.7/5 rating. No hotel stay required.
Comfort Suites Chantilly - Dulles Airport — Around $5.99/day. Cheapest budget option. 6 miles in Chantilly. Limited shuttle hours (6:15 AM – 9:30 PM) — not for late or early flights. 4.7/5 rating.
Spark By Hilton Sterling Dulles Airport — Around $6.50/day. 3.7 miles in Sterling. Hourly shuttle 6 AM–10 PM only. 4.6/5 rating with 610+ reviews.
Hyatt House Dulles Airport — Around $6.95/day. Extended-stay hotel parking. Shuttle every 30 minutes 6 AM–11 PM, first-come-first-served.
DoubleTree by Hilton Dulles Airport - Sterling — Around $6.95/day. On-demand shuttle 6 AM–10 PM. Highly rated (4.7/5 with 1,168 reviews). 6.4 miles out — furthest off-site lot.
DoubleTree Washington Dulles Airport (Formerly Hilton) — Around $8.25/day pre-booked. Extended shuttle hours: 4 AM–midnight covers most flight times. 4.9/5 rating.
Crowne Plaza Dulles Airport — Around $9.95/day. Best covered option — 75% covered parking deck. 24/7 shuttle every 30 minutes. EV charging available. 4.7/5 rating.
IAD finally got direct rail access in November 2022 with the WMATA Silver Line Metrorail. The station is connected to the main terminal via an indoor pedestrian tunnel with moving sidewalks (~600 ft, 5-minute walk).
Silver Line travel times from IAD:
• Reston (2 stops) — 8 minutes
• Tysons Corner (3 stops) — 15 minutes
• Rosslyn — 40 minutes
• Metro Center (downtown D.C.) — 53 minutes
• L'Enfant Plaza (National Mall) — 55 minutes via Metro Center transfer
Fares range from $2.25 off-peak to $6.75 peak. For Tysons Corner, Reston, or other Silver Line destinations, Metro is excellent — fast, cheap, no parking needed.
For downtown D.C., Metro is significantly cheaper than the $55–$80 rideshare or $51–$58 Washington Flyer Taxi (plus $5 trip fee). But the 53-minute travel time is much longer than DCA's 10-minute Yellow Line ride to L'Enfant. For time-sensitive trips, DCA + Metro beats IAD + Metro.
Dulles is in the middle of a $7 billion capital improvement plan. Key 2026 milestones:
• Concourse E ($500M+) — Brand new concourse. 435,000 sq ft, 14 gates (7 widebody or 14 narrowbody). New 40,000 sq ft United Club. Connected directly to AeroTrain. Opening fall 2026.
• D2 Dulles Development Project — Will replace aging Concourses C and D (1983 temporary structures). Construction begins October 2026.
• Capital One Lounge — Opening soon in Main Terminal directly after TSA PreCheck. Capital One Venture X cardholders only.
• 100 MW Solar Power Facility — Part of sustainability plan. Includes battery storage and electric bus charging.
The airport's iconic main terminal (Eero Saarinen, 1962) with its dramatic suspended catenary roof is a National Historic Landmark and remains the architectural centerpiece. The AeroTrain people mover connects the terminal to Concourses A, B, and C; mobile lounges still serve Concourse D (one of the last airports using these "plane mate" vehicles).
• Free EV charging at IAD — Garage 1 has 96 EV charging stations and Garage 2 has 66 — all free with parking (you only pay standard parking rates). Garage 1 has the most chargers. Stations are 120V Level 1 — best for long-term parkers.
• Pre-book for guaranteed space — Reserve at reserve.flydulles.com. Especially important during international travel peaks.
• Verify shuttle hours — Most off-site hotel shuttles are NOT 24/7. Hyatt Regency runs 24/7 (best). Comfort Suites runs 6:15 AM–9:30 PM only. DoubleTree Formerly Hilton runs 4 AM–midnight. Match shuttle hours to your flight times.
• Express Valet text service — Text your valet ticket number to (703) 214-4455 upon landing — your vehicle is ready at the Service Center when you arrive.
• Allow time for inter-terminal transit — AeroTrain stations connect Concourses A, B, C. Concourse D requires a mobile lounge. Allow 10–15 minutes for connections.
• Capital One Venture X opens new lounge soon — If you're a Venture X cardholder, the new Capital One Lounge opens in Main Terminal in 2026.
• Watch for IAD vs DCA cost tradeoff — IAD parking is cheaper than DCA, but ground transportation to D.C. is much more expensive ($55–$80 rideshare vs $12–$20 from DCA). Total cost favors DCA for most downtown trips.
